  Netafim – Bio-Organic Research

As a leading and experienced agriculture and irrigation company, Netafim is committed to the environment. The company's Agriculture Department is staffed by world-renowned agronomists, and backed up by the in-depth knowledge accumulated over 30 years of satisfying our clients.

In Bio-Organic or Ecological agriculture, produce is grown in accordance with the environmentally-friendly materials and methods approved by organic organizations.

In that bio-organic agriculture is a constantly-evolving field, growers are called open to stay abreast of new developments, and implement innovations on an ongoing basis. To help address these needs, the Netafim Organic Department has undertaken a number of experiments and research projects, in conjunction with the Israel Bio-Organic Agriculture Association (IBOOA).

  • Weed Eradication – Bio-organic agriculture forbids the use of conventional herbicides, and drip irrigation can offer a solution to the problem of weeds. When water is delivered via drippers to a smaller, more focused radius around the plant, a natural benefit is that the number of weeds is lessened – in addition to the significant water and nutrient savings. With sub-surface irrigation, the field surface is kept dry, too, which reduces unwanted seed germination. To further examine this issue, Netafim is participating in joint research with Genesis, subsidiary of worldwide organic seed producer “Organics", which will take place in the Negev dessert beginning March 2004.
o Leaf Disease Prevention – With drip irrigation, the upper portion of the plant (foliage, fruits and flowers) stay dry, which significantly lowers the instances of leaf disease. Research is currently ongoing on potatoes grown in the Western Negev dessert.
  • Organic Fertilization in Orchards – Using drip irrigation methods, it is possible to irrigate compost more effectively, maintaining optimum humidity and minimizing nutrient washout. Further, it is possible to inject dissolved nutrients into the drip irrigation system, enriching the compost's nutritional value. Netafim is conducting research on organic compost ditches on a wide variety of crops in various regions of Israel.
  • Preventive Maintenance of Drip Irrigation Systems – Netafim offers a wide range of drippers which are specially designed for operation under difficult water conditions. Additionally, Netafim has developed and distributed an "Organic Maintenance Manual," which describes simple procedures and practices that help extend the life of irrigation systems, ensuring trouble-free operation for many years.
